Physical Education

All pupils will continue to have two periods of Core PE each week.

Pupils can choose an additional period of PE, which will give them the opportunity to attain a qualification in PE in addition to the other eight subjects.

If they choose to study a short course instead for that period then they are unlikely to attain course certification in PE. (Short Courses will vary depending on the interests or career aspirations of the pupils but one example is ‘Money Management’)

 

The PE course consists of the following areas of study:

The aim of the National 3/4/5 PE course is to develop personal and physical qualities, from fine motor skills, endurance and strength to confidence, respect and tolerance, motivation and determination. Through individualised training programmes, pupils will be challenged both physically and mentally. It is essential for national 5 pupils to complete aspects of their training programme outside of school.

 

Performance Skills – Developing skills, techniques, fitness and sportsmanship in badminton, basketball, football and softball.

Factors impacting on Performance (FIP) – this is the theory unit which will be covered by in class and at home through homework tasks.

Added Value Unit (National 4) – this is the practical assessment at the end of the course and involves a competitive performance in 1 activity.

One off performance (National 5) – this is the practical assessment at the end of the course that involves two competitive performances, in two different activities for example, badminton and basketball.

Portfolio (National 5) – is the 25 page document pupils will produce throughout the year which details their personal development plan they have designed – including performance analysis techniques, training methods, aspects of fitness and evaluation/target setting. This work in completed in school under exam style supervision.

 

Breakdown of marks at National 5 (120 marks)

50% portfolio – 60 marks

25% practical performance activity 1 – 30 marks

25% practical performance activity 2 – 30 marks
